Downtown Cortland’s Blues Series Keeps the Beat

Friday May 4th at 9 p.m. Downtown Cortland's Blues series "Bring Back Blues" hosted by Lucky’s Tavern at 77 Main Street highlights Big James and the Chicago Playboys.

Big James and the Chicago Playboys regularly play Chicago's most happening blues venues and perform with Blues legends and innovators. With the lead vocals and trombone of "Big James" Montgomery the Chicago Playboys represent Chicago style Blues at its finest.

"Chicago style Blues is a type of Blues I've been interested in bringing to Cortland for a long time," said Bob "Bobcat" Catalano, owner of Lucky's. "We used to have a more vibrant Blues scene here and I thought it was time to Bring Back Blues."

Bring Back Blues is a monthly performance of Chicago style blues on the first Friday of every month. The series is supported by the New York State Music Fund, established by the New York State Attorney General at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors. Through a collaboration with SUNY Cortland, the Center for the Arts and other downtown music venues like the Blue Frog, the Main Street Music Series, Grace Episcopal Church and www.cortlandmiusic.org the whole community has access to a range of live music performances that highlight national and local talent.

"Downtown Cortland is the cultural heart of our community," said Lloyd Purdy, Executive Director of the Cortland Downtown Partnership. "Through the support of our downtown restaurants and taverns, live music has really found a home in downtown Cortland."

Bring Back Blues at Lucky's and the Folk Series at the Blue Frog are the first two downtown venues to be spotlighted in a cross promotional marketing campaign that highlights music around Cortland County. This marketing campaign includes radio spots and print ads that highlight the places and music that make Cortland's music scene so vibrant. The theme of the campaign is "Cortland is Center Stage". The campaign is supported by Lucky's Tavern, the Blue Frog Coffeehouse, the Main Street Music Series, Grace Episcopal Church, the Center for the Arts in Homer, the SUNY Cortland musical theatre department, and www.cortlandmusic.org.

Future Bring Back Blues Performances Include:

  • Eddie Shaw & The Wolf Gang 1-Jun Fridays at 9 p.m.
  • Kinsey Report 13-July Fridays at 9 p.m.
  • Andrew Jr. Boy Jones 3-Aug Fridays at 9 p.m.
